The first trailer for director Kenneth Branagh’s “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” starring Chris Pine as the titular CIA analyst who kicks a lot of ass and works best under pressure, has landed. Fifth in the Jack Ryan series, which includes “The Hunt for Red October” and “The Sum of All Fears,” the film is based on characters from the spy novels by author Tom Clancy, who died this week at age 66.
Previously portrayed by Alec Baldwin (“Red October”), Harrison Ford (“Patriot Games,” “Clear and Present Danger”) and Ben Affleck (“Sum of All Fears”), the Jack Ryan character now finds himself embroiled in an impending Russian terrorist attack on US soil. According to the trailer, Jack is now married, and his wife (Keira Knightley), has her suspicions about his double life. Which is just as stressful.
The Russian villain here is, natch, played by Branagh himself, who directed the film from a screenplay by David Koepp and Adam Cozad. Kevin Costner also costars. Slated for a December 25 release via Paramount, “Shadow Recruit” is the first Jack Ryan film in over 10 years.
