Ben Affleck & Matt Damon Bringing DC Comic ‘Sleeper’ To The Big Screen

Ben Affleck & Matt Damon Bringing DC Comic 'Sleeper' To The Big Screen

Once upon a time, about six years ago, an adaptation of DC Comics‘ “Sleeper” was being tossed around for the big screen. Warner Bros. were tentatively eyeing an incarnation that would’ve paired up director Sam Raimi, with Tom Cruise slated to star. Needless to say, it didn’t come to pass and everyone kind of forgot about it. Well, “Sleeper” has awakened once again.

This time around Batman and Jason Bourne — aka Ben Affleck and Matt Damon — are teaming up to produce an adaptation of Ed Brubaker‘s comic set up, you guessed it, at Warner Bros. Helping to pull it all together will be Shawn Ryan (“The Shield,” “Terriers“) and David Wiener (“The Killing“), who will pen the screenplay about an operative whose fusion with an alien artifact makes him impervious to pain and allows him to pass it on to others through skin contact. He’s hired undercover by a spy agency to infiltrate a group of baddies, and winds up falling for a gal, the appropriately named Miss Misery. (Also the name of an Elliott Smith song, featured in “Good Will Hunting” which, well, you get the connection — just a  fun piece of trivia).

And while there has been much talk in recent weeks of Warner Bros. plans for an expanded DC universe on the big screen, it seems they aren’t letting the one-off stuff from the comic company and other fascinating material they have in their cupboard get ignored (don’t forget those Sandman” rumors). An intriguing bit of news, but also a project that we’d guess is still likely to stay in development for a while. [THR]
