Cahiers du Cinema’s Best of 2013

Cahiers du Cinema's Best of 2013

The storied French journal Cahiers du cinema can always be counted on to throw a few curveballs when it comes to year-end lists, and 2013 is no exception. Their Top 10, which they’ve posted with comments in French, includes a not-atypical assortment of Francophone art films and American auteur product — in past years, they’ve lauded such unloved Stateside entries as Francis Ford Coppola’s Tetro, and stuck by M. Night Shyamalan through The Village and The Lady in the Water. Because Cahiers‘ annotations are, naturally, in French, Criticwire has brought the full weight of our one semester abroad to bear and translated them for your perusal.

Cahiers du cinema‘s Top 10 Films of 2013

1. Stranger by the Lake

2. Spring Breakers. “From this idiot object streams a sort of poetry that is at once repulsive and naive, burlesque and synthetic, vulgar and stupid — a kind of lost poetry.”

3. Blue Is the Warmest Color

4. Gravity. “Survival instincts and the death drive intermingle in a vast movement of entropy and apocalyptic destruction.”

5. A Touch of Sin

6. Lincoln“With this film, one senses that Spielberg wanted to make an elegy for democracy. It touches the heart of intelligence.”

 7. Jealousy

8. Nobody’s Daughter Haewon. “Never has the derision of ideal love confronted with pettiness of daily life been filed with such perfidy by the director.”

9. You and the Night (Rencontres apres minuit)

10. Age of Panic (La bataille de Solferino)
