It’s been over a decade since the events of 9/11, and the reverberations of that day are still being felt in almost every area of American life, from the recent scandals of the NSA, the government’s approach to foreign policy and more. One issue that perhaps hasn’t been discussed at the length it deserves is how the landscape has changed for Arab-Americans, but an upcoming documentary is tackling the topic head on.
Director Usama Alshaibi (“Profane,” “Nice Bombs“) explores the intersection of politics and identity in his forthcoming “American Arab.” The provocative doc takes a look at a diverse array of Arab-American life, the “coming-of-Arab” experience and the contradictions some feel in choosing the United States as their home. And this exclusive trailer highlights both the humor and drama Alshaibi’s film uses in discussing this subject, with the documentary sure to spark many conversations.
“American Arab” makes its world premiere this week at IDFA. Kartemquin Films will release the documentary in 2014. Watch below.
