Guitarist and musician Mick Turner
‘s resume speaks for itself. Not only has he earned acclaim as a member of instrumental outfit Dirty Three
but he’s also logged time as part of The Tren Brothers
, while working with an array of artists and groups including Cat Power, Boxhead Ensemble, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy
and even contributed to the score of John Hillcoat
‘s “The Proposition
.” But he’s also been turning out records under his own name and so coming soon is his latest album Don’t Tell The Driver,
and he’s got a pretty special video to go with it.
directed the spot for “The Bird Catcher
,” and his collaboration with Turner began a few years ago when the filmmaker used some of his tracks for his feature “Shit Year
.” “I did the music for the film rather than the other way around. Without me actually seeing it, we talked about it and I sent him something,” Turner said. And music helps power a pretty remarkable, eight-minute video featuring the late Karen Black
who passed away earlier this year
. And Archer treasures the experience and time he spent with her.
“Cinematographer Darren Lew and I shot with Karen a few years ago, before she was sick,” Archer explained. “Watching Karen perform was an incredible experience. She created an entire world out of that basement. The audio recording you hear in the piece was made a year after we shot, at her home. She improvised everything. Karen was the kind of actress who knew how to make everything out of nothing. All you could do is watch, and you felt lucky to see it. I miss her.” Thankfully, we’re now all lucky to see the resulting work.
Don’t Tell the Driver arrives on LP and CD on November 19th from the good folks at Drag City. Mick Turner is also on tour this month, and you can see his dates below.
