Magnolia Pick Up U.S. Rights To Richard Ayoade's 'The Double,' Starring Jesse Eisenberg & Mia Wasikowska

Of all the films coming out in 2014 we’ve already seen, it’s safe to say Richard Ayoade‘s “The Double” is near the top of our list. Starring Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska, the film is a dark, Kafka-esque story centered on a man who is driven insane by the appearance of his doppelgänger. We called it one of the five best films we saw at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, our man in London also dug it and our review described it as “surreal and absurd,” noting it “confirms Ayoade as one of the brightest rising talents behind the camera, it’s completely his own and unlike anything you’ve seen in cinemas in quite some time.”

Hard to argue against that. Well, others have noticed too. The film has been picked up by Magnolia Pictures for a 2014 release. No release window has been given, but don’t be surprised if the film hits in the spring alongside other smart, arty and challenging fare like Denis Villeneuve’s “Enemy” and Jonathan Glazer‘s “Underneath The Skin.

Co-written by Harmony Korine‘s brother Avi, the story follows a man named Simon (Eisenberg) who is overlooked at work, criticized by his mother and ignored by his dream woman (Wasikowska). When new co-worker James arrives (also played by Eisenberg), the man’s world is changed by the doppelgänger, who is everything that he is not. The film also features appearances by Chris O’Dowd, Sally Hawkins, Noah Taylor, Paddy Considine, Wallace Shawn and Craig Roberts from Ayoade’s debut feature, “Submarine.” Check out our interviews with Wasikowska and Ayoade to tide you over until the theatrical release.
