Netflix Orders Four Marvel Series: 'Daredevil,' 'Jessica Jones,' 'Iron Fist' and 'Luke Cage'

Maybe Netflix hasn’t been keeping up with the ABC’s middling “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” or maybe the streaming giant just thinks it can do better. Either way, in the latest of a string of new announcements from the company, Netflix today unveiled a multiyear deal with Disney to develop four live-action series based on Marvel characters.

The series, which will begin rolling out in 2015 and will unfold over several years, will start with “Daredevil,” followed by “Jessica Jones,” “Iron Fist” and “Luke Cage.” They’ll be set in the same universe in Hell’s Kitchen, New York, and each will get a minimum of 13 episodes, leading to an “Avengers”-style miniseries event called “The Defenders,” which “reimagines a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters.”

Marvel Entertainment’s Alan Fine said in the announcement that “This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel’s brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling. This serialized epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television and gives fans the flexibility to immerse themselves how and when they want in what’s sure to be a thrilling and engaging adventure.”

The shows will be produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Television Studios, and will mark the latest expansion in Marvel’s screen universe. This deal comes on the tail of the one Netflix made with DreamWorks Animation to develop 300 hours of original programming based on the company’s characters, starting with “Turbo: F.A.S.T.” (Fast Action Stunt Team), which will be Netflix’s first children’s series, based on DreamWorks’ movie “Turbo” and slated for December.
