While it may seem like we’re still only in the midst of the various awards season campaigns, nominations have already started to be handed out across the pond. Over the weekend, the European Film Awards dropped their list of the movies being honored this year and it has been quickly followed this morning with the British Independent Film Awards, who are shining a light on another batch of worthy films and talent.
Leading the way are two movies which have captured The Playlist attention on the festival circuit, kicking off with David Mackenzie‘s gritty prison drama “Starred Up,” which earned eight nominations, and was described by our man in London as “muscular-yet-tender” and a movie to “keep an eye on this when it hits theaters in 2014.” Coming in behind with seven nominations is “The Selfish Giant,” Clio Barnard‘s acclaimed film which rode the festival circuit with much success this year (our review).
Other notable nominees can be found in the Best Actress category with Judi Dench and Scarlett Johansson picking up nods for “Philomena” and “Under The Skin” respectively, with the latter film also being nominated for Best Director and Technical Achievement for the fantastic score by Mica Levi. Meanwhile, “Blue Is The Warmest Color,” “Blue Jasmine” and “Frances Ha” were among those representing Best International Independent Film.
Check out the full list of nominees below. The awards will be handed out December 8th.
