Trailer of the Week: Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston Crave Blood in Jim Jarmusch's 'Only Lovers Left Alive'

Before the Trailer, We Thought: How many vampire flicks does the current landscape really need? While the trend has been watered down through a young adult lens by the likes of “Twilight” & Co., Jim Jarmusch seemed a game choice for probing the genre’s gothic roots, with an added dose of humor. And that cast? Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska, John Hurt, Anton Yelchin: sign us up.

And now? As the plot crystallizes, it seems that conflict will come from familiar places. Newly reunited after centuries’ apart, Adam (Hiddleston) and Eve (Swinton) find their fragile love exacerbated by Eve’s hell-raising little sister (Wasikowska.) And, as always, a dearth in viable blood provokes much cause for concern. The scenery, however, looks to be something different. A transatlantic tale, shuttling between Tangier, Detroit, and beyond, the lush and moody feel of the film strike an enticing tone. Further, Jarmusch seems to be capitalizing on his droll sensibilities, with Hiddleston posturing like the self-pitying musician in the corner of your local coffee shop. Fusing ancient traditions with contemporary tendencies, Jarmusch has injected “Only Lovers Left Alive” with a feeling all its own.

Sony Pictures Classics has yet to determine the film’s release date.
