Before he was Walter White, one of television’s greatest protagonists, Bryan Cranston acted as the bungling suburban dad Hal on “Malcolm in the Middle” for seven seasons. It’s one of the many reasons his then being cast as “Mr. Chips goes Scarface” worked so well — “Breaking Bad” had the association of years of benign sitcom fatherhood off of which to play as its main character delved into drug dealing.
While fans online have joked about the shows existing in the same universe — what if Walt went into witness protection and met Jane Kaczmarek’s Lois? — “Breaking Bad” has gone one step further with this just-surfaced alternate ending that is almost certainly from the upcoming DVD box set coming out November 26th. Kaczmarek tweeted about stopping by the “Breaking Bad” set in January, and what seems to have been the result is this charming salute to the famous “Newhart” finale that finally unites Walt and Hal.
