The results of Nonfics.com’s first documentary poll are up, along with individual ballots from the critics and documentary filmmakers editor Christopher Campbell asked to contribute. The winner, The Act of Killing, has already finished at or near the top of several polls, but the high finish for Zachary Heinzerling’s Cutie and the Boxer, which finished ninth in Indiewire’s poll and got a solitary point in the Village Voice poll, is a surprise.
In every poll, the points drop off dramatically after the first two or three entries. It took only two voters to secure a sixth place for Lenny Cooke in the Voice Poll; first-place The Act of Killing got four times the votes of 10th place 20 Feet From Stardom in the Nonfics poll, and a whopping seven times the points of the Indiewire poll’s 10th-place finisher, After Tiller. The unavoidable conclusion is that there are more documentaries released than (almost) anyone can keep up with.
