AMC Cancels ‘Low Winter Sun’

AMC Cancels 'Low Winter Sun'

Low Winter Sun” has been a rare misstep for AMC, a network with a great, if limited, track record.

Its only other quickly canceled series so far has been “Rubicon,” which at least had a critical following — “The Killing,” despite its touch-and-go status, lasted three seasons on the cable network. The Detroit crime drama “Low Winter Sun,” which starred Mark Strong and Lennie James, managed to catch on with neither viewers nor the press. This afternoon, the news broke (confirmed by Variety) that the series had been canceled after one season.

“Low Winter Sun” had a great lead-in with “Breaking Bad,” but after premiering with 2.5 million viewers slid in ratings. It was the only new scripted show AMC debuted this year.

Next up for the network will be two new period dramas in 2014 — “Turn,” a spy saga starring Jamie Bell and set during the Revolutionary War, and “Halt & Catch Fire,” set in the 1980s in Texas’ Silicon Prairie and starring Lee Pace and Scoot McNairy.
