Simon Kinberg Creating A Shared Comic Book Movie Universe For Fox's Marvel Characters

With extensive work on Neill Blomkamp’s “Elysium” and also the upcoming “Star Wars” films as a writer, producer Simon Kinberg has locked in recently on the sci-fi/fantasy front, but those aren’t enough—comic book adaptations have found his focus as well. Next summer’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past” and the Josh Trank-directed “Fantastic Fourremake both bear his name as writer/producer, but in a new development over at 20th Century Fox, which owns both franchises, he stands to have even more of a corner on the market.

THR reports Kinberg and his Genre Films banner have inked a new first look deal with Fox for the next three years, and the first order of business for him is to expand the ‘X-Men‘ and ‘Fantastic Four‘ universes. Yesterday “X-Men: Apocalypse” was announced for a 2016 release, after the franchise onslaught of 2015, but Kinberg is looking for an even larger growth—one more akin to Marvel Studios. “I have a lot of ideas on how to built those brands and do what everybody is thinking of these days: Be like Marvel,” he said. “I want to be able to build stories over multiple movies.”

Alongside those known Marvel properties that Fox owns, Kinberg is also hoping to develop original stories as well: the graphic novel adaptation “Rust” with Carlos Saldana directing could be greenlit next year, while another adaptation of Andy Weir’s e-book “The Martian” with Drew Goddard set to write and direct may happen as well. Firm plans from Fox on the matter are currently a mystery, but the one thing that’s certain is that Kinberg—tapped early on by Fox as a writer on 2005’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”—will show some brand loyalty for the next few years.
