The Cannes Market created Cinando which is more than just a database. Seeded by the original database created by yours truly, called FilmFinders, the
Cannes Market Director, Jerome Paillard, has extended Cinando’s purpose of giving clear definition to international sales agents’ product and territorial
distributors’ acquisitions.
Producers now (as well as international sales agents) may also not only list projects but may stream them, selectively permitting all who are registered as
professionals and who are interested to view completed films on demand in a secure online environment.
Cannes has extended access to Cinando to other selected festivals and markets as well. This includes the Berlinale’s European Film Market (EFM), the
American Film Market (AFM), Cannes’ own sister market Ventana Sur in Argentina, BAFICI (Argentina’s indie festival showcasing the best of Latin American
art house films, or FICG (Guadalajara’s Film Festival showcasing the best of Mexican cinema as well as another set of top Latin American art house films),
Los Cabos, Fantasia, Karlovy Vary Film Festival and more.
And now its agreement with the Sundance Institute allows for Sundance filmmakers to stream on demand as well. If a Sundance filmmaker has a producer rep or an international sales agent, they may also choose to allow their films to stream on demand.

Industry professionals who are not taking advantage of this top level network of international professionals are missing an opportunity for scouting
talent, promoting talent and just plain seeing films of international importance. The talent agencies and the studios often feel themselves in a privileged
position above the grassroots level and do not permit the Sundance galas or the films they are representing to actively post on Cinando (on demand and with
permission) which ultimately deprives them of easy access to the very buyers they say they are seeking to license the film to. And they are losing the
opportunity to spot the talent which has been carefully curated by festivals.
As we write this from Havana and as I witness the beginnings of a Caribbean Film Network which will be showcasing cinema from Trinidad and Tobago,
Barbaddos, Martinique, Cuba, Sta. Lucia, Curacao and others islands and nations with Caribbean coastlines, it becomes very apparent how important Cinando
is becoming as the internet hub of industry contacts and cinema streaming and sharing.
The point of view that SydneysBuzz takes is quite different from that of the top international sales agents, the top producers, the major talent agencies,
studios, or even of the market itself. They view the international, independent business of cinema from the top down. We see it from the bottom up, from
the new filmmakers’ POV whom we coach online, in courses, seminars, panels and in consultation.
