The wolf is almost upon us. Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf Of Wall Street,” that is, the director’s “Goodfellas”-esque look at the gangster-like cheats and liars in the New York stockbroker world in the mid 90s. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey, Jean Dujardin, Margot Robbie, Kyle Chandler and many more (including directors Rob Reiner and Spike Jonze) as a tease, a new poster and TV spot have been unveiled along with a almost 30 minute THR roundtable interview with Scorsese, DiCaprio, Hill and screenwriter Terence Winter (the creator and head writer of Scorsese’s “Boardwalk Empire”).
What do we learn in the Q&A? Lots. We know the movie almost got an NC-17 rating, and the 3-hour-long movie underwent “multiple rounds” of cuts with the MPAA. Though Paramount chairman Brad Grey says, “There were really not major cuts in this movie; there were trims.” DiCaprio calls it a “hard R [rated]” film. Evidently it almost came together a few years ago, but Scorsese says they wound up doing “Shutter Island” instead while they tried to round up the funding for it.
The potential issue for this one is whether or not it’s too much like Scorsese’s past classics. ” ‘It feels like ‘Goodfellas’ and ‘Casino.’ Would it be OK if I wrote it in that style?’ And everybody was on board with that,” Winter said.
As for DiCaprio, he’s now done five movies with Martin Scorsese, and who does he have to thank for it? Good ol’ De Niro.
“I remember seeing the film, of course, and Robert De Niro was the one who told me about Leo. He said, ‘I worked with this kid in this film [‘This Boys Life‘]. You should really work with him someday,” Scorsese reflects. Nice kudos if you can get them.
