Aaron Sorkin's 'The Newsroom' Officially Renewed for a Third and Final Season on HBO

Over four months after “The Newsroom” star Jeff Daniels tweeted that the Aaron Sorkin HBO series had been renewed for a third season, HBO has finally given official confirmation that the show will be back — and that the third season will be its last.

“‘The Newsroom’ is classic Aaron Sorkin — smart, riveting and thought-provoking,” said HBO’s Michael Lombardo. “I’m sure this farewell season will be one to remember.” Production on the third and final season will begin this spring and debut in the fall.

At the TCA press tour last summer, Lombardo said the odds were “excellent” for a third season renewal of the Aaron Sorkin drama, but that “the conversations with Aaron are all about schedule.” The “Social Network” writer had multiple film projects in the works that are presumably taking up his time, and he’s (in)famously taken on the lion’s share of the writing for “The Newsroom.”

Sorkin, Scott Rudin and Alan Poul will be back as executive producers in this third season, with Paul Lieberstein (“The Office”) joining the show as an executive producer. Jeff Daniels (who won an Emmy for his role as Will McAvoy last year), Emily Mortimer, Sam Waterston, John Gallagher, Jr., Alison Pill, Thomas Sadoski, Dev Patel and Olivia Munn.
