Amazon Close to Closing Deal on Pilots From Whit Stillman, Marc Forster

Following in the digital footsteps of Netflix, Hulu and a growing list of others, Amazon Studios is close to moving forward with three new pilots for original series, according to Deadline. One is a comedy from acclaimed film director Whit Stillman (“Metropolitan,” “Damsels in Distress”) called “Cosmopolitan” and the other two are dramas — “Hysteria,” from television producer and former teen idol Shaun Cassidy (“Invasion”), and “Hand of God,” which is to be directed by Marc Forster (“World War Z”) in his TV directing debut.

Stillman will direct, write and executive produce “Cosmopolitan,” which Deadline describes as a love story between a clique of expatriates living in Paris. “Hysteria” has a sci-fi premise and follows a female doctor who returns to her hometown in Texas to investigate an apparently technologically generated plague that is afflicting high school girls.

In addition to these projects, Marc Foster (teaming up with “Burn Notice” executive producer Ben Watkins, who wrote the script) is potentially bringing to Amazon “Hand of God,” an unusual crime drama. The series will follow a morally questionable judge, played by Ron Perlman, who suddenly starts to receive religious messages from a voice coming from his ventilator-bound son.

Neither the “Cosmopolitan,” “Hysteria” nor “Hand of God” pilots have officially gotten a greenlight from Amazon yet, though Deadline has the latter as aiming to shoot in March.

Amazon launched its original series in November with comedies “Alpha House” and “Betas.” The online retail giant’s next batch of pilots, which include its first two dramas, “Bosch” and “The After” from “X-Files” creator Chris Carter, are expected to be placed online soon for the company to gather reactions and data from viewers before deciding which to order to series.
