'American Hustle,' 'Wolf Of Wall Street,' 'Before Midnight' & More Earn WGA Nominations But Not Coens

Are awards season voters no longer entranced by the magic of the Coen Brothers? Even with “Inside Llewyn Davis” earning no shortage of acclaim, that has not translated into very much love from awards types, with the film getting completely shut out of the Producers Guild Award nominations yesterday. And today, the Writer’s Guild have also shunned the sibling duo.

The nominations for the Writers Guild Awards have dropped, and there are some interesting choices. Namely, we’re surprised to see “Dallas Buyers Club” in the mix for Original Screenplay, when something like “Gravity” is left out. Perhaps this suggests the former is a bigger player than suspected come Oscar time (especially with the PGA nom giving it a boost), while the latter could simply be playing for tech awards.

Otherwise, no big surprises here, though “Lone Survivor” gets a bit of a boost in the Adapted Screenplay category. Meanwhile, “The Wolf of Wall Street,” still seen as too hardcore, again nudges in perhaps hinting that for the most part, voters have been enjoying Martin Scorsese‘s bonkers exploration of drugs, hookers and fraud.

The awards will be handed on February 1st. Full list below. [Variety]
