David Fincher Talks 'Gone Girl' with EW, and the Appeal of Ben Affleck: "He Knows What It's Like to Be Hunted"

As revealed earlier, Entertainment Weekly’s cover story is David Fincher’s “Gone Girl,” starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. (Check out the edition’s cover image, photographed by Fincher, here.) EW sits down with Fincher to talk his big-screen adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s bestseller thriller. Highlights below.

Fincher on the middling success of 2011’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”:

“All you need to do is look at my filmography to know that I have no idea what people want… We may have been too beholden to the source material.”

On wanting to hire Affleck, because a) he’s also a director, and b) he knows the wrath of public opinion:

“No one will find you out faster than the guy who made ‘Argo’… Ben inherently knows what [getting that negative media attention] is like. He knows what it’s like to be hunted.”

On the enigmatic appeal of Rosamund Pike:

“I always liked her. I’d seen four or five movies with her and I didn’t have a beat on her.”
