The 25th annual GLAAD Media Award nominations are out, and well, they are what they are. Nice to see “Blue is the Warmest Color” and “Kill Your Darlings” get some (expected) love here – but in the “wide release” category? From what I can tell, neither went much over 100 screens. And now they are competing against three films that featuring supporting (or downright limited) LGBT storylines: “Dallas Buyers Club” (no comment), “Philomena” and “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” (which I’ve never seen but trust has a queer-positive subplot).
In the limited release and documentary categories, “Concussion,” “Yossi,” “The New Black,” “Bridegroom,” “Call Me Kuchu,” “Valentine Road” and “God Love Uganda” all got deserved notices. I would have liked to see “Laurence Anyways” get some love, and hope that “Stranger By The Lake” and “Pit Stop” simply weren’t eligible this year. But overall, it’s hard to complain. I’m happy to see “Orphan Black,” “Orange Is The New Black” and “Brooklyn Nine Nine” pop up in the TV categories, though really: The GLAAD Media Awards just nominate whatever few options they have, which leaves little room for snubs — even though that’s really not their fault. It’s just what happens when you have awards with dozens of categories honoring a fairly minimally portrayed minority.
Special honorees will be announced in the coming weeks with the awards scheduled to be handed out in Los Angeles on April 12 and in New York City on May 3. Here’s a full list of nominees:
