Rumor: Daniel Espinosa To Direct 'Assassin's Creed' Starring Michael Fassbender

Easy Money” director Daniel Espinosa has always made it clear that he doesn’t have to direct. “I have a very easy life and a beautiful wife,” he told PopMatters in the run up to “Safe House.” “I don’t need anything. I do movies because they give me something. I can walk away any time, because I am happy.” That being said, he’s also never been busier, with the Tom Hardy-starring “Child 44” coming up, in addition to being linked to a small handful of projects including remake “A Gang Story” and the John Grisham adaptation “The Racketeer.” Now, his name is being tossed around for what would be the biggest movie of his career.

According to Twitch, there are rumblings that Fox is eyeing Espinosa to helm “Assassin’s Creed,” their big video game adaptation starring Michael Fassbender, that’s due in theaters in 2015. You may recall that Espinosa and Fassbender were previously scheduled to work together on the yakuza flick “The Outsider,” before Tom Hardy and Takashi Miike became attached (with that version of the project recently falling apart). It’s an intriguing prospect, but will Espinosa reconcile his previously stated feelings about working on big Hollywood movies, in order to take this on?

“In Europe, a director works with the idea that they don’t have enough money. You have to find creative ways to compromise the solution,” he told Current. “In America, you have enough money to get all the shots you need. You have all the money you want. It’s almost like a dilemma. How can you be creative when everything is possible?”

But maybe that’s just the challenge he’s looking for. “Assassin’s Creed” opens on August 7, 2015 so we imagine a decision on the director will be coming soon.
