Starz Gives a Series Order to 'Flesh and Bone,' a Dark Ballet Drama From 'Breaking Bad' Producer Moira Walley-Beckett

Starz just premiered pirate drama “Black Sails,” its Leonardo de Vinci-as-action-hero series “Da Vinci’s Demons” is returning for a second season in March and it has the 50 Cent-produced nightclub saga “Power” set for later this year. That’s a lot of testosterone — but the premium network’s newest series has a decidedly more feminine slant.

Starz announced this morning that it has given a series order to “Flesh and Bone,” a gritty drama set in the world of ballet created by Moira Walley-Beckett.

Walley-Beckett was an executive producer and writer on “Breaking Bad” (she scripted “Ozymandias”), and will be executive producing this new drama alongside Lawrence Bender (“Inglourious Basterds”), Kevin Brown (“Roswell”) and John Melfi (“House of Cards”). Bender, Brown and Walley-Beckett all have connections to the world of ballet — Bender and Walley-Beckett are former dancers, and Brown’s family was the basis for the film “The Turning Point.”

In addition to a slate of professional dancers already announced as cast members, “Flesh and Bone” will star Sarah Hay (“Black Swan”) in the lead role of Claire, a gifted ballet dancer with a distinctly troubled past who joins a prestigious ballet company in New York.

Production on the series is scheduled to begin in New York City in early 2014 — the show will air in 2015.
