Walt Disney Pictures has seemed to develop a penchant for spin-offs, prequels, and re-imaginings in the past years (see “Oz the Great and Powerful”; “Planes”). With the release of the latest one’s trailer, we’re wondering if “Maleficent” could be on its way to picking up a gay following?
Potentially one of the summer’s first blockbusters, “Maleficent” stars Angelina Jolie as the infamous title character made iconic in the 1959 animated classic of our childhoods, “Sleeping Beauty.”
Of course there’s nothing explicitly queer in the teaser, but it seeps of campy undertones. There’s Angie looking bewitching as ever in her queen bitch attire, the equal parts precocious and precious Elle Fanning (as Sleeping Beauty herself), some fairy princesses fluttering around, and it’s all set to a cover of “Once Upon a Dream” by undeniable gay icon Ms. Lana Del Rey. And then there’s Australian heartthrob Brendon Thwaites as Prince Phillip (see the above photo), and Lesley Manville in a role the size of which we’re not so sure (but following her stellar performance a few years back in Mike Leigh’s “Another Year,” her name on the cast list is enough to turn anything into a must-see).
Of course we’ll have to wait and see if the finished product ends up blowing or not — still either way, we’re mildly excited for the film that might acquire a little queer following… or at least as much of one as any Disney princess movie would.
