A&E's 'Bates Motel' Looks to Jump on the Trend of Live After-Show's with 'After Hours'

Capitalizing on a recent precedent set by other popular TV shows, A&E’s “Bates Motel” will be followed by a live after-show when it returns March 3. Titled “Bates Motel: After Hours,” the special will include the programs’ two main stars, Vera Farmiga and Freddy Highmore, as well as Max Thieriot and executive producers Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin. The half-hour live show will feature the actors and producers discussing the night’s episode as well as answering fan questions.

Deadline Hollywood reports “After Hours” is to be aired as a stand-alone special following the premiere, but could continue in the following weeks if the ratings are strong enough. Like similar post-shows in the past, “After Hours” will try to capitalize on the ratings of its lead-in original program and extend advertising revenue for its network. “The Walking Dead” uses the same strategy with “The Talking Dead” and “Breaking Bad” did the same with “Talking Bad” before the series ended last September. “Sons of Anarchy” also started an after-show online last season.

Post-shows have always been popular among reality shows, but are a somewhat new trend for original programming. “Survivor”—arguably the first major reality show—used live post-shows during its ratings heydays and still makes them available online.
