Here's How to Win Your Oscar Pool in Sound Mixing and Sound Editing Categories

For all those scrambling to make the right predictions for their Oscar pools, you may want to get an inside scoop on what exactly you’ll be betting on. With so many categories that could go any which way, it’s no surprise that so many people are wondering how exactly they’re supposed to judge the quality of some of the areas of filmmaking they know absolutely nothing about. 

But perhaps no area is more ambiguous to the general movie-going public than that of sound, particularly considering the baffling categories of sound mixing and sound editing. Well, for those who’d like to know exactly what differentiates these two categories, Dolby has provided a simplified explanation (using “Star Wars” as a prime example) of the oft-misunderstood distinction between mixing and editing. 

Essentially, sound editing consists of post-production sound created to either put together the details of what is portrayed on-screen (a series of footsteps, a plane crashing) or to enhance what has already been recorded on set. Sound mixing, on the other hand, is comprised of the final product that is heard when you see the movie on the big screen. Between the music, the dialogue, the background noises and of course, the sound effects edited for the film, the art of sound mixing lies in just how everything is brought together to induce the ultimate viewing (and hearing) experience.
