Robert Schwentke (“Red,” “Flight Plan”) will take over the directing reins from Neil Burger on “Insurgent,” Lionsgate/Summit Entertainment’s sequel to dystopian romance “Divergent” (March 21), adapted by Evan Daugherty and Vanessa Taylor from Veronica Roth’s bestseller series. Akiva Goldsman is currently rewriting Brian Duffield’s draft of sequel “Insurgent,” which is scheduled for release on March 20, 2015, will be filmed in Atlanta, GA and Chicago, IL. The third film in the series, “Allegiant,” is slated for release on March 18, 2016.

“Insurgent” continues the saga of Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) as her world is on the verge of civil war.

Red Wagon Entertainment’s Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher will produce the sequel along with Pouya Shahbazian. Joining the team are Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman, who will executive produce the movie via their Mandeville Films banner along with Barry Waldman.

College student Roth’s “Divergent” has topped The New York Times Best Sellers list ever since it was published in April of 2011 by Katherine Tegen Books/HarperCollins Publishers. Roth followed her first novel with “Insurgent,” which also scored the #1 position on best sellers lists, and most recently released “Allegiant” which sold 455,000 copies on its first day of sales, breaking a company record for HarperCollins. The studio acquired the film rights to the book series in early 2011, several months before the first novel was published.

Erik Feig, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group’s President of Production, and Gillian Bohrer, Lionsgate’s SVP of Production, are overseeing the project for the studio.
