Is Warner Bros. developing "Space Jam 2"?

Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Warner Bros. is putting Space Jam 2 in fast track development.

For a studio with a lax program to compete with the feature animation explosion – The Lego Movie grosses have certainly awakened the sleeping giant.

NBA MVP LeBron James will reportedly star (though there was some debate about that from various sources last night) in producer Charlie Ebersol’s project, which is being run through
his production company, The Company. Ebersol’s brother, Willie
Ebersol, who won an Emmy for producing the TV broadcast of the London Olympics, has supposedly written the screenplay – his first.

Jon Berg is production executive on the project
at Warner Bros.

The original 1996 film wound up grossing $230M worldwide.

Post Script: As soon as this story hit the internet there have been numerous reports denying any truth to it. Deadline Hollywood and reporter Anita Busch are reliable industry sources – so I’ll trust their exclusive report until otherwise notified. Most of the online rumor denials are based around word that LeBron James has not signed on. ESPN.com’s Brian Windhorst tweeted that there was no deal in place for James. We’ll keep you posted as to the truth of this news item as developments arise.

Editorial note: With so many possibilities and scenarios for the Looney Tunes characters to reappear in feature length format – a retread or sequel to Space Jam is the least of all good ideas. While I have no desire to see another Space Jam film, I will concede that if it takes a project like this to keep Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig in the public spotlight, and if it will cause the studio to enthusiastically continue to restore its library of classic cartoons (roughly only half of the over 1000 classic shorts are ready for High Def distribution), I’m willing to give it my support.

Game on!
