Karen O, U2, Idina Menzel and Pharrell to Sing Oscar Nominated Songs at the Oscars (UPDATED)

Karen O, U2, Idina Menzel and Pharrell to Sing Oscar Nominated Songs at the Oscars (UPDATED)

No big surprise here: Singer-songwriter Karen O will, for the first time, perform the Oscar®-nominated original song “The Moon Song” for a global television audience on the Oscars March 2, show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron confirmed.

“The Moon Song,” with music by Karen O and lyric by Karen O and Spike Jonze, was written for the film “Her,” directed by Jonze. Karen O is the lead singer of the band Yeah Yeah Yeahs, which has released four albums, three of which have been nominated for Grammy Awards. She previously co-wrote original songs for the soundtrack of Jonze’s 2009 film “Where the Wild Things Are,” receiving a Grammy nomination for the featured song “All Is Love.” Karen O has performed on other soundtracks including “Frankenweenie” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and “I’m Not There.”

EARLIER: U2 will also play their Oscar-nominated song “Ordinary Love” (“Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom”) live at the Oscars, along with “Wicked” star Idina Menzel, who voices the Snow Queen in “Frozen,” who will perform “Let It Go.” Pharrell Williams is also set to sing “Happy” from animated blockbuster “Despicable Me 2.”

Menzel participated in a “Frozen” concert Sunday night with co-stars Kristen Bell and “Book of Mormon” star Josh Gad, who held their own with the Broadway powerhouse.

Golden Globe Best Song-winner Bono and “Get Lucky” Grammy-winner Pharrell, whose song currently sits at number two on the iTunes Songs Chart, as well as Karen O are also hot on the campaign trail, showing up at the annual Oscar Nominees Luncheon on February 10.

There is no fifth nomination for Best Song this year following the Academy’s decision to rescind its nomination for “Alone Yet Not Alone.” The song was given an unfair advantage after musician Bruce Broughton, also a former Academy governor, decided to reach out to music branch executive committee colleagues via email and suggest they check out the selected track.
