Warren Beatty's Long Developing Next Directorial Effort Moves Ahead, May No Longer Be About Howard Hughes

We know, we’ve been here before. Back in 2012 Warren Beatty‘s untitled Howard Hughes film, which has been developing for years, was said to still be “in the works,” with the legendary actor also set to direct, with a cast that was said to include Felicity Jones, Annette Bening, Jack Nicholson and Owen Wilson. We didn’t hear anything again until now, with a report that now says the movie is “moving foward.” That’s progress we suppose.

Showbiz 411 has the story, and they reveal that Beatty may have scrapped the Howard Hughes idea all together. Though nothing is confirmed, the site claims that Beatty may have just created his own character instead, to free him up from sticking to biographical details, which makes sense. As for the cast? Don’t ask. Apparently “nothing on the IMDB” page for the film (which has the project titled as “The Rules Don’t Apply“) is correct. But in case you’re wondering, back when the movie was about Howard Hughes, it centered on a woman who first gets involved with Hughes’ driver and confidante, before falling for the man himself, with the story apparently spanning two time periods in Hughes’ life.

That version of the movie came close to being made in 2011, before financing collapsed, when Morgan Creek bailed on the production. New Regency, one of the partners at the time, is still behind the movie with things “in full swing,” but that can mean anything. But we could sure use a bit more Beatty. It’s been over a decade since we’ve seen him either on the big screen or behind the camera, and his return would be more than welcome.
