In the documentary, “What Difference Does It Make,” director Ralf Schmerberg gives the audience an intricate look at the way music is made when new artists are able to meet the artists that inspire them in a different city every year. In 2013, the summit was held at the Red Bull Music Academy, and entertained notable guests such as ambient music pioneer Brian Eno, Erykah Badu, hip-hop producer Just Blaze, and Q-tip of A Tribe Called Quest fame, among many others.
Beyond being another documentary about music, this piece. which marks the Red Bull Music Academy’s 15th anniversary, looks to subvert its viewers into a more abstract way of looking at how music is made, putting emphasis on the mental and emotional state that musicians are subject to when creating. In an ever-evolving musical landscape, where “Amazing Grace” can be turned into an electro dance track, “What Difference Does It Make” argues that, in the grand scheme of things, there is no discerning feature that separates country from hip-hop from techno; it’s all coming out of the same need.
