Weekly Update for February 7: Women Centric, Directed and Written Films Playing Near You

Films About Women Opening

The Pretty One – Written and Directed by Jenee LaMarque

Zoe Kazan (Ruby Sparks) stars as a pair of identical twins in this pleasantly quirky dramedy. As much a sweet tale about learning to love oneself as it is a meditation on the malleability of femininity, The Pretty One centers on socially awkward Laurel, who impersonates her sister Audrey after the latter perishes in a car accident. (Inkoo Kang)

Vic + Flo Saw a Bear

Few who see Vic + Flo Saw a Bear will forget it. The lesbian couple at the heart of this brutal Canadian drama have two catastrophes heading their way: their slow-as-molasses break-up and a sudden burst of violence. In my Village Voice review, I call it an “exceptional French-language film [whose] strongest elements are borrowed from Greek tragedy. It’s an ominous, claustrophobic, unhappily sapphic work whose thunderclap of a climax instills terror and awe of the fates’ petty, whimsical cruelties.” (Inkoo Kang)

Nurse 3D

By day Abby Russell is a dedicated nurse, someone you wouldn’t hesitate to trust your life with. But by night, her real work begins — using her smoldering sexuality, she lures cheating men to their brutal deaths and exposes them for who they really are. When a younger nurse starts to suspect Abby’s actions and compromises her master plan, Abby must find a way to outsmart her long enough to bring the cheater you’d least expect to justice. (IMDB)

Vampire Academy

Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, half human/vampire, guardians of the Moroi, peaceful, mortal vampires living discretely within our world. Her legacy is to protect the Moroi from bloodthirsty, immortal Vampires, the Strigoi. This is her story. (IMDB)

Mars at Sunrise – Written and Directed by Jessica Habie

Mars at Sunrise is the story of a war waged on imagination. A painter’s resistance, courage and spirit can never be imprisoned in this highly stylized story of the conflict of two frustrated artists on either side of Israel’s militarized borders. Inspired by the creative journey of renowned Palestinian artist in exile Hani Zurob and on true stories and testimonies from the region, we witness expression, confinement, torture, jealousy, courage and freedom as both artists from each culture strive to paint a picture of life surrounded by conflict. (Press Material)
