Fox Searchlight Dates Sundance Hit 'Calvary,' Starring Brendan Gleeson

Fox Searchlight picked up at the Sundance Film Festival “Calvary,” writer-director John Michael McDonagh’s follow-up to the masterful “The Guard,” also starring Brendan Gleeson. The distributor has now booked an August 1 release date, in limited theaters. (Our Berlin Film Festival review is here.) That suggests that the film might go to Cannes. In August a movie can build a head of steam with audiences (Woody Allen’s “Blue Jasmine” came out July 26, “The Butler,” August 16). But it’s a tad early for a movie that carries Oscar hopes–it means skipping the fall fests.

Official Synopsis:

CALVARY’s Father James (BRENDAN GLEESON) is a good priest who is faced with sinister and troubling circumstances brought about by a mysterious member of his parish. Although he continues to comfort his own fragile daughter (KELLY REILLY) and reach out to help members of his church with their various scurrilous moral – and often comic – problems, he feels sinister and troubling forces closing in, and begins to wonder if he will have the courage to face his own personal Calvary.

The film is produced by Chris Clark, Flora Fernandez Marengo and James Flynn.
