The first anniversary of the Supreme Court’s overruling of Proposition 8 is coming up, and HBO Documentary Films has the perfect film for the occasion. Ben Cotner and Ryan White’s documentary “The Case Against 8” will hit theaters in New York and Los Angeles June 6 and will expand to select cities June 13. The film will also play on HBO on June 23, in time for the one-year anniversary.
“The Case Against 8” takes an inside look on the battle against California’s ban on same-sex marriage. The film follows the legal team of conservative Ted Olson and liberal Dave Boies, former rivals in the “Bush v. Gore” case, and the four plaintiffs in the suit as they take their case from California all the way to the Supreme Court.
Cotner and White’s film has been a favorite on the early 2014 festival circuit, winning the Directing Award in Sundance’s U.S. Documentary competition and the SXSW Audience Award in the Festival Favorites category. A compassionate look at those affected, the film could be a sleeper hit if all goes well.
