A few years ago, it seemed we couldn’t stop hearing about a new Pee-wee Herman movie, with both producer Judd Apatow and star Paul Reubens continually teasing about the brewing project. “I would give anything to tell you right this second the plot of this movie because I’m so excited about it and it’s so phenomenal and you would laugh your asses off if I told you,” Reubens teased at SXSW in 2011. “But I can’t tell. I begged Judd Apatow to let me announce it here and I don’t know why, but he doesn’t want to do that yet.”
Well, the man himself has let the cat kind of out of the bag, while speaking recently to students at Loyola Marymount University. “We’re pretty close to getting that going,” Apatow said when asked about the project. “We’ve kicked around a couple of titles. ‘Pee-wee Takes A Holiday’—that was one of them. But we have a great script that he wrote with a friend of mine, Paul Rust and I think we’re probably going to get to do that soon.”
Of course, “soon” could be anything. If Apatow is going to direct, it’ll have to wait until after his forthcoming “Trainwreck,” which shoots this summer for release next year. But it seems more likely he’ll stick with this role as producer, which certainly opens up the opportunity for the Pee-wee movie to move a bit more quickly.
However it shakes out, it seems a Pee-wee Herman movie is still on the horizon—are you looking forward to it? [THR]
