“Magic Mike 2,” the sequel to the baby-oiled and rippling original which grossed $167 million worldwide, will reportedly start production this fall.
Now, Steven Soderbergh has retired from the big screen, setting his focus on the world of episodic content with Cinemax’s upcoming medical turn-of-the-century drama “The Knick.”
Without Soderbergh, the sequel’s been moving ahead with star Channing Tatum taking the reins (the actor Instagrammed photos of himself working on the road trip-oriented script — next to a bust of Matthew McConaughey — and he’s even hinted he might direct). No word yet on whether the hotter-than-hot recent Oscar winner McConaughey would return as the cowboy thong king Dallas.
At any rate, “Magic Mike” star Joe Mangianello, while promoting this weekend’s gory actioner “Sabotage,” said of “Magic Mike 2”:
“Yeah,
it’s gonna happen this fall. I think they’re
going to announce it soon. It’s
crazy. I didn’t think that would be my
first franchise. I never thought that
would ever be the direction of my career.”
