Pivot, the cable network launched last year by Participant Media, is planning on bringing the Peabody Awards to TV. Administered by the University of Georgia, the George Foster Peabody Awards call out excellence and service by broadcasters, cable and webcasters.
Last year’s winners included Smithsonian Channel’s “MLK: The Assassination Tapes,” HBO’s “The Loving Story” and “Marina Abramović: The Artist is Present,” the “Independent Lens” installment “Summer Pasture,” WNYC’s “The Leonard Lopate Show,” FX’s “Louie,” ABC News’ coverage of Superstorm Sandy, doc series “Why Poverty?” and TNT’s “Southland,” among others.
Pivot’s made a multi-year alliance with the Peabodys that will begin this year and go through 2016. This year’s honorees will be announced April 2. The Peabody medallions will be presented May 19 at a luncheon ceremony at New York City’s Waldorf-Astoria hotel. The 2014 Peabody Awards special, premiere date to be announced, will blend highlights from the presentation ceremony with exclusive interviews with featured award recipients.
Past hosts of the Peabody Awards include Walter Cronkite and Jon Stewart.
