Sofia Coppola is in talks to direct a live-action version of “The Little Mermaid,” a project that previously had Joe Wright attached. (Wright is now moving full-steam ahead with another fairytale reboot, “Pan,” which recently cast Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily.)
The film, which has “Edward Scissorhands” scribe Caroline Thompson reworking the script (Kelly Marcel and Abi Morgan took earlier passes at it), is with Universal and Working Title.
Per Deadline, “the intention is to move quickly.”
In some ways, “The Little Mermaid” works perfectly in Coppola’s wheelhouse. Many of her films examine the confused identity of youth, as in last year’s underrated “The Bling Ring.” The story of a girl who trades her fins for legs in the name of what she thinks is true love could go over just swimmingly with Coppola’s hand at the helm.
