The Pink Panther Returns — Again

The Pink Panther Returns -- Again

MGM has revealed it’s developing a feature-length “Pink Panther” reboot, which will be a hybrid of animation and live-action. Walter Mirisch, executive producer of the original “Pink Panther” films and television series will serve as the producer of the new film and animator David Silverman (“The Simpsons Movie,” “Monsters, Inc”) will direct.

The timing is pointed, as the production marks the 50th anniversary of the inept French cop, Inspector Clouseau, immortalized by master of slapstick comedy Peter Sellers (and later, Steve Martin). Julie Andrews is also serving as producer for the new project; her late husband, Blake Edwards, helmed the hilarious 1963 original and its sequel “A Shot in the Dark,” which focused less on stealing jewels and more on the bumbling detective, and many of the sequels.

This time around the focus will be on the Panther itself, as opposed to Clouseau, harkening back to the look of the Fritz Freleng and David De Patie cartoons.

After James Bond, the Pink Panther franchise is one of the longest-running in cinema history, spanning five decades and 11 titles. Watch some clips below.
