‘Veronica Mars’ Premieres at SXSW Nearly One Year After Kickstarter Campaign

'Veronica Mars' Premieres at SXSW Nearly One Year After Kickstarter Campaign

Even rain couldn’t put a damper on the premiere of “Veronica Mars” earlier today at SXSW — nearly one year after the Kickstarter campaign resurrected the TV series and seven years after the show went off the air.

Introducing the film, director and co-writer Rob Thomas thanked Warner Bros., the cast of the film and the Kickstarter backers. A very wise move considering the backlash Zach Braff faced after his Kickstarter-funded “Wish I Was Here” premiered at Sundance and he neglected to thank his backers.

“I really want to thank the people at Warner Bros. Just so you know, the easiest answer for a big corporation is no, and Warner Bros. said yes. Warner Bros. let us try this experiment, and we’re so grateful. I can’t tell you how well they have treated us for being such a small movie. They have treated us like a really important project,” said Thomas.

“Finally, most important — and I think I can say this more than any other movie that has ever been made — thank you to the fans of “Veronica Mars.” The Kickstarter backers, we would not exist without you. This was the only way this movie was going to get made. Thank you so much. I hope you enjoy the movie.”

In addition to Thomas, stars Kristen Bell, Chris Lowell, Jason Dohring, Tina Majorino, Percy Daggs, Ryan Hansen, Enrico Colantoni, Amanda Noret and Francis Capra were in attendance for the packed premiere.

“They often say that a writer’s protagonist is his alter ego and I think I speak for all of us when I say that Rob we’re so grateful that your alter ego is a teenage girl,” said Bell.

More than 91,000 backers contributed towards the $5.7 million to revive the cult TV show for the big screen. The film will be released March 14 in theaters and on Video on Demand.
