Fresh off of his Oscar win for directing and editing “Gravity,” Alfonso Cuaron has a new TV series, “Believe,” scheduled to debut on NBC March 10, and the network has decided to capitalize on that for its preview of the first two minutes of the show’s pilot.
The clip begins with the announcement that it was created and directed by Cuaron, but the credit might not have been necessary, given how recognizably it fits within Cuaron’s work. Playing a bit like a re-imagining of Stephen King’s “Firestarter” crossed with the famous car scene from Cuaron’s “Children of Men,” it’s a pretty memorable opening, both for Cuaron’s patented long take and for the frankness of the violence as a shady organization executes the protectors of a supernaturally gifted young girl.
The series concerns Bo (Johnny Sequoyah), a girl with incredible abilities beyond her control, and Tate (Jake McLaughlin), a wrongfully-convicted death row inmate broken out of prison in order to protect her from evil forces. The show also stars Delroy Lindo as one of Bo’s protectors and Kyle MacLachlan as the man after her. Watch the clip below.
