In the vein of Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman, actor Chadwick Boseman seems to be getting some highly-coveted roles playing renowned African-American icons. One year after his breakthrough performance as Jackie Robinson in “42,” Boseman now returns to the screen to play none other than musical genius James Brown.
The biopic “Get On Up” depicts James Brown’s life from his early childhood, marked by its severe poverty, all the way to his attainment of celebrity as one of the most important musicians of his generation. The trailer indicates that James Brown’s unforgettable music and undeniable presence in history is alive and well, infusing the power of his music with the harsh tragedies that have shaped him to become the public figure we remember today.
“Get On Up” also stars Oscar-nominee Viola Davis and Oscar-winner Octavia
Spencer as James’ mother and aunt, respectively, and reunites them with
their “The Help” director Tate Taylor. The film will be released August 1, 2014. Think it has Oscar potential?
