WATCH: First Trailer for 'The Giver' -- Weinsteins Give YA Drama 'Butler' Slot

A first trailer for “The Giver” has arrived, adapted from Lois Lowry’s classic YA novel of the same title. Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges both star (with Bridges playing the Giver), along with Alexander Skarsgard, Katie Holmes, Taylor Swift and Brendan Thwaites. Watch below.

The film is reuniting Aussie director Phillip Noyce with the Weinstein Company after a once-tumultuous run with “The Quiet American” and “Rabbit-Proof Fence.” It’s slated for an August 15 release–that’s the “Butler” slot, a relatively open late-summer period when it’s easier to nab some box office before the crowded fall season. (It will be interesting to see if the Weinsteins opt to push the movie back for a fall festival push.) Noyce is currently editing in NYC.

What do the Weinsteins currently have on their 2014 potential Oscar docket? There are two films that played Toronto last year, the undated true camel trek saga “Tracks,” starring likely Best Actress contender Mia Wasikowska and Adam Driver, and fest opener “One Chance,” starring James Corden as Paul Potts, whose life changed overnight on “Britain’s Got Talent,” as well as fashion biopic “Yves Saint Laurent,” which debuted in Berlin (June 25).

Not mentioned on the Weinstein slate is Cannes opener “Grace of Monaco,” starring Oscar bait Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly, which the Weinsteins pulled from their January schedule. It’s mired in a not-unusual tug-of-war between director Olivier Dahan and Harvey Weinstein over final cut and a release date. The trailer is strong.
