A new trailer for the big budget summer sci-fi “Edge of Tomorrow,” starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, has crash-landed. Directed by Doug Liman, this is an adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s animated young adult novel “All You Need Is Kill.”
In the near-future of “Tomorrow,” Earth is under the siege of an alien race. Tom Cruise plays a Major who dies violently during a suicide mission, but is somehow thrown into a time loop, forced to relive the day he died again and again. The rest of the plot details sound like makings of a video game — with each successive replay of his death, the major gains increased skill to fight his adversaries.
Liman’s last film was the modest Valerie Plame drama “Fair Game” in 2010. In the 90s, he cut his teeth in indie films “Swingers” and “Go.” He’s certainly come a long way.
