About Jim Amos

Jim Amos is the publisher of Box Office Insider. 

A noted personality in film distribution and sales, Jim Amos served Sony Pictures for nearly 30 years. He began as a trainee in the studio’s Boston branch, and company executives quickly took note of his talent. A year after joining the studio, Jim Amos relocated to San Francisco where he became a sales representative in the busy Northern California region. Over the next four years, he drove sales success in a number of Columbia Pictures regional offices, including Detroit, Cleveland, and Southern California, the company’s largest region.

In 1988, Tri-Star Pictures acquired Columbia Pictures and, attracted by Jim Amos’ notable success record, brought him on board. Named to the position of District Manager, he held secondary responsibility for the entire Western division. The company then came under the direction of Sony Pictures, which also retained Amos and made him District Manager of its busy Eastern division. Highly successful in this role, he soon earned a promotion to Division Manager and Senior Vice President of Distribution. In 2009, Rory Bruer, the departing President of Domestic Distribution, selected Amos as his replacement, whereupon Jim Amos took on his role of President of Domestic Distribution until he left in 2013.

Over the course of his career, Jim Amos has played a key role in the success of several films that each have grossed more than $100 million. His resume includes marketing and sales efforts for the Spider Man trilogy, Men in BlackHitch, and Casino Royale. In 2011, he received the prestigious Show ‘E’ Award from ShowEast film group, which recognizes accomplishments and dedication to the industry.

An active volunteer in the industry as well as in the community, Jim Amos has served as Treasurer of the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation, and continues to serve on the finance board. He also is an active member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the planning committee for its upcoming museum. He also has served numerous hours with the Motion Picture Club, which has honored Amos with its Nat Stern Outstanding Service Award. 


“It seems like a paradox that to attract people to the big screen in movie theaters, we need to reach out to people on smaller screens on tablets and smart phones, but that’s today’s reality,” says Jim Amos, former president of Sony Pictures’ domestic distribution. “It can be an exciting time for film marketers, but only if they recognize that they need to think outside of the box and find a way to entice potential cinephiles and their friends online.”
