Alejandro González Iñárritu's 'Birdman' Will Not Be Going To Cannes

In a few days, the Cannes Film Festival will announce their slate, and while we have our guesses as to what movies will feature on the Croisette, one film that was widely expected to showcase in the south of France won’t be in the lineup.

Fox Searchlight confirmed with The Playlist that Alejandro González Iñárritu‘s “Birdman” will still be in post-production through the end of May and early June, and will not be part of Cannes. But don’t be too bummed. The studio has announced a fall release date for the movie, and our guess is that you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled to Telluride or TIFF instead.

Bringing together a starry ensemble, including Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough and Amy Ryan, the black comedy tells the story of an actor (Keaton)—famous for portraying an iconic superhero—as he struggles to mount a Broadway play. In the days leading up to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career, and himself. We’ve long been excited for this one, with a great premise, an inspired lead and lots of comic potential. And the fall date certainly is promising.

“Birdman” flies on October 17th.
