The wonderful folks over at The Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies (CLAGS) at the CUNY Graduate Center have just announced their “Queers and Comics” LGBT Cartoonists’ Conference for next year. And they’ve knocked it out of the park by lining up Alison Bechdel and Howard Cruse as keynote speakers. Bechdel has been in the news a fair bit, most recently after Chris McKay worried that “The Lego Movie” hadn’t passed her eponymous test. Together they are two of the most important and importantly political queer cartoonists working at the moment.
This is what the organizers had to say about the conference:
The Queers & Comics Conference will celebrate, explore, and analyze queer cartoonists and their work. It will offer LGBT cartoonists, comics writers, and artists an opportunity to share information about their craft, to document the history and significance of queer comics, and to discuss how LGBT cartoonists navigate the comics industry. The conference spans two days and will offer panels, workshops, portfolio reviews, and slideshow presentations, as well as an exhibition of queer cartoon art. All events at the conference will be live streamed and video will be archived for future viewing.
This forum will spotlight the veterans of LGBT cartooning in North America and internationally, and will examine how queer comics reflect and critique queer culture. Queer comics publishers, editors, journalists, academics and readers are also encouraged to attend.
“Queers and Comics” will take place May 7-8, 2015. Sure that seems a ways away, but before you know it proposals will be due so get thinking about them now! An official call for contributions will be distributed soon – keep an eye on the CLAGS website for more details. Also, if you’re in NYC sign up for their email updates because not a day goes by when they don’t have a killer interesting and usually pretty path-breaking lecture / seminar / event about LGBT issues.
