Phil Lord & Chris Miller Come To Their Senses, Reportedly Bail On Directing 'Ghostbusters 3'

So, a couple weeks back, you may have been delighted (or horrified) by the news that Phil Lord and Chris Miller were eyeing the director’s chair for “Ghostbusters 3.” On the one the hand, these are the guys have turned out critically acclaimed smash hits “Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs,” “21 Jump Street” and “The Lego Movie.” On the other hand, they can do so much better than trying to revive this wheezing, forever developing sequel. Thankfully, they’ve bailed.

As per The Wrap:

And that makes complete and total sense. Lord and Miller already started the year hot with Warner Bros. and “The Lego Movie,” and if “22 Jump Street” is the smash it’s expected to be for Sony, Hollywood will be the filmmakers’ oyster (if it wasn’t already). They will pretty much have carte blanche to try whatever wild idea they want to next.

And while we don’t know the conversations that are happening behind closed doors, we can only surmise that there is only so much creative latitude being given to “Ghostbusters 3,” especially given how closely Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd have been shepherding the thing. We’d love to see Lord and Miller completely dismantle the sequel and rebuild it through their own unique sensibility. But, we’re not shocked it’s not gonna happen.
That said, the current plan for “Ghostbusters 3” to shoot next spring is not so far-fetched; they just need to find a director. One who will be down with the plan for a story that will apparently involve Peter Venkman’s son. (Sorry Bill Murray).
