Syfy's 'Definace' to Feature Linda Hamilton in Season Two & Four More Facts Learned at NBC Universal's Summer Press Day

“Holy shit. How the fuck did we get her?”

Julie Benz spoke for the group regarding the casting of “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” star Linda Hamilton on SyFy’s action series, “Defiance.” On a somewhat subdued Tuesday afternoon in Pasadena, the cast and showrunner were in lively spirits, joking and prodding the gathering of reporters to ask them more questions at NBCUniversal’s Summer Press Day. Here’s what we learned from the rambunctious bunch, including Benz, showrunner Kevin Murphy, Grant Bowler, Tony Curran, Stephanie Leonidas, Jaime Murray, and Jesse Rath:

Linda Hamilton “will make you cry and scare the crap out of you.”

After Benz summed up the shock of the group when the casting was announced, showrunner, writer and executive producer Kevin Murphy said the star of “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” “plays an amazing character that will hopefully make you cry and scare the crap out of you.”

The cast also commented on Hamilton’s general basass-ery, including the actress’ ability to assemble any weapon quickly, and that she’ll give “[lead character Joshua] Nolan a run for his money” in the tough-as-nails department.

“Expect the unexpected in season two.”

After one reporter asked about the ambiguous ending to season one, Murphy said the lack of clarity was intentional regarding Stephanie Leonidas’ character, Irsa. “The intent of that was indeed meant to be a teaser for the next season,” he said. “I can tell you, in season two, all questions will be answered.”

“I think, also, [you should] expect the unexpected in season two,” Leonidas added. “It doesn’t quite go the way maybe people will think it will.”

Walking in heels is much harder than wielding weapons.

The cast was asked about the difficulties inherent in the physically demanding nature of the show. Tony Curran joked “working with Grant Bowler” was the hardest part before the rest of the cast agreed the the cold and applying the makeup are the hardest parts. Then Benz chipped in, saying, “I have a hard time walking through the backlot because my character is always in heels. Trying to wear high heels in gravel is next to impossible, and when it’s frozen over it’s even harder.”

“Weapons, swords, and charge blades — that’s the fun stuff for us,” quipped Jesse Rath.

After playing the innocent on “Dexter” all those years, Julie Benz finally gets in on the action in season two of “Defiance.”

Benz was terrific as Dexter’s partner on the recently finished Showtime program, but despite buckets and buckets of blood (some of it ending up on Benz, sadly), the actress never got a chance to mix it up herself. That’s going to change in season two of “Defiance.”

In an off-handed quip, Rath said, “Julie gets to kick some butt in season two. […] Bloody some people’s noses.”

“I like that,” Benz replied.

So we do, Julia. So do we.

What’s the key to looking fit, fellas? Makeup.

Jesse Rath was asked about putting on so much alien makeup and his experience with it every day on set. “There’s a lot of naked Alak in season two,” Rath said about his character. “What’s cool about playing a naked alien is when they put makeup on you, on every angle they put shading so you can imagine when they’re doing my whole body it makes me look more muscular than I really am.”
