Watch: First Trailer For Jim Mickle's Noir 'Cold In July' Starring Michael C. Hall, Sam Shepard & Don Johnson

They don’t make ’em like this anymore. Well, more accurately, they don’t make ’em like this anymore, but Jim Mickle still does. The director behind “Stake Land” and “We Are What We Are” returns with another genre exercise with “Cold In July,” and the first trailer has arrived.

Michael C. Hall, Sam Shepard and Don Johnson (having a blast) star in this one about an ordinary Texas man who kills an intruder who breaks into his home one night. The event sets off a chain reaction when the victim’s father, a grizzled ex-con, comes looking for who killed his boy, and slowly, the everyman is pulled into a mystery that has dark consequences.

The film is set in the ’80s, but also feels like a product of the era too, with the twist, noir-tinged tale deserving a beat-up VHS cover and a big bowl of popcorn to go with it. Fans of this kind of stuff will dig it. And our review from Sundance calls it “unusually absorbing and memorable.”

“Cold In July” opens in limited release and on VOD on May 23rd. Watch below.
