5 Daily Tech Stories That Filmmakers (and Film Fans) Must Read: More Women Directors on Netflix, Vimeo Gets Original and More

1. Vimeo Gets Original: Following in the footsteps of Netflix, Amazon and Hulu, Vimeo today announced its first original programming project with “High Maintenance,” based on the critically acclaimed web series of the same name from the husband-and-wife team Katja Blichfeld and Ben Sinclair. Vimeo will finance six new episodes to launch exclusively on Vimeo On Demand. Read the full story here.

2. “Community:” Don’t cry, “Community” fans. Looks like your favorite show may return. Seems that Hulu and the production company of “Community,” Sony TV, are in preliminary discussions to bring back the canceled comedy for a sixth season–and a movie. Read more here.

3. Women Directors on Netflix: In case you missed it, earlier this week, we published a story about 10 great women-directed films you can stream now on Netflix. Of course, the list was not comprehensive and readers pointed out on social media that we neglected to include some of their favorites. 4. Angry Kickstarter Backers: Though we list “The Punk Singer” as one of the great women-directed films streaming on Netflix, seems Sini Anderson, the director of the Kathleen Hanna doc, has not fulfilled her promises to backers who supported the film’s Kickstarter campaign. “Because of the perceived success of the film right now, people think I have made a lot of money off of it,” she told Buzzfeed. “I’m barely getting by right now.” She said that though her Kickstarter backers helped fund the film’s post-production, she funded the majority of the documentary’s production costs on her own — and now can’t afford to send out the next batch of rewards. “Even though rich people own this movie, rich people did not make this movie,” she said.

5. VHX: Anne Thompson has a great piece about VHX, the direct-to-fan video platform that made Indiewire’s first-ever list of Influencers. Thompson points out that VHX is making the company’s stats public, updating their site daily with numbers of titles for sale (over 1000), total transactions, customers who’ve bought more than one title from VHX, sales by geographic region and VHX total gross revenue (north of $3 million). At the moment, they don’t provide information about specific titles, but that could change at some point. Check out Thompson’s story here.
